Layout from Instagram 1.2.2
The network that lets you share pictures with the world also launched an app to help users create all sort of collages that they can later post on Instagram. However, if it intends to compete against top collage apps, it needs to come with more tools.
Fluent design but few features
Layout from Instagram does come with a tutorial, filled with all sort of instructions for showing new users how to pick photos to add to their collages. However, it doesn't use material design but has a rather simplistic UI with only a few features at hand. It also lacks a settings menu, you can't make any changes to the interface or enable other settings.
Actually, the app is quite rudimentary compared to other collages applications on the internet, which actually gather millions of downloads because they offer lots of features.
Create collages, but don't expect much
People like to look their best in pictures that they share online, especially when it comes to Instagram. That's why it's suprising that Layout doesn't come with any filters to apply on pictures. Even if it's a collage app, we've seen others that also provided users with filters or at least frames.
Layout also lacks stickers or any kind of overlays that you can apply on images. Instead, you can pick from some templates, but the selection is quite limited. You can enlarge certain pictures or long press on one to swap places with another.
Some tools
Users can replace pictures at any time, use the mirror feature to make it more unique or flip photos inside the collage. Save images on your phone and then share them on Instagram, Facebook or more social networks.
You can use images from your own gallery, the camera can be accessed from inside the app but only if you tap on the logo. The gallery also contains all folders that you have saved there, together with a section with selfies and one with recent pictures. That being said, the app is quite simplistic compared to other collages that you might find in the store.
