Screenshot Ultimate 2.9.24
Intuitive GUI with instructions
It doesn't take too long after running the app to notice that it is very poorly designed. The interface is clunky and chances are you will get lost in the app's screens. For example, the main screen includes two buttons named Triggers and Settings. Tapping on the Settings button takes you to another screen where there are also two buttons labeled Triggers and Settings, which is confusing. The ads and the constant nag screens that invite you to buy the Pro version ruin the user experience even more. On the good side, the app includes help popups that guide your every step and explain all the available functionality in detail.
Many functions for customizing screenshots
Screenshot Ultimate is advertised to work on non-rooted devices. Even though the developers boast that the app supports no less than 16 capture methods, none of them actually worked without toot access on the test device – a Nexus 5 running KitKat. The software includes an automatic detection mode but, unfortunately, it failed to find a viable method.
According to the developers, if no capture method is found, downloading and running a separate app on your computer will do the trick, provided you have USB debugging enabled on your Android device and the correct drivers installed on your computer. However, after trying it out, the result was the same. After granting the app root access though, it discovered two methods that worked.
Impressive list of trigger methods
Screenshot Ultimate features an impressive list of trigger methods. You can choose to take a screenshot by pressing the hardware buttons, tapping on an icon that stays on top of all the screens, shaking your smartphone, clicking on a notification icon or a home screen widget, blowing into the microphone, placing your finger on the proximity sensor, connecting or disconnecting the power, using the light sensor, visiting an URL in a web browser, etc.
Screenshots can also be taken according to a defined schedule or time interval. Furthermore, the screen capture can be triggered via an intent, which is useful if you are using an automation tool like Tasker.
After taking a screenshot, you can preview the image and decide if you want to keep it, rotate or crop it, draw on it, add text or a watermark, apply different effects like grayscale and sepia, open it in another app for further editing, and share it. What's more, some of these options can be applied automatically to every screenshot you take. The screenshots can be saved in either the PNG or JPG format.

Bottom Line
Design / UI5
Screenshot Ultimate is poorly designed and the user interface is confusing. Much can be improved in this area. |
Function9
Screenshot Ultimate is highly versatile and packs more features than you're likely to need. |
Security8
Screenshot Ultimate requires internet access for displaying ads and for uploading the screenshots. The permissions are explained on the app's Google Play Store page. |
Battery8
When it comes to power consumption, Screenshot Ultimate does a pretty good job. |
Price6
Screenshot Ultimate is free, but bugs you with ads and constant nag screens. Purchasing the Pro version gets rid of these annoyances. |
Compatibility7
On non-rooted devices, taking screenshots doesn't work. If you have a rooted smartphone or tablet running at least Android 2.1, you are good to go. |
