VLC for Windows Phone 2015.428.1805.204
VLC is one of those applications and now it is ported to the Windows Phone platform, so if you were used to it from a desktop PC or laptop you can enjoy it onto your handset as well.
Intuitive GUI with a friendly design
The app offers a clean look, with neatly drawn graphics that are consistent from end to end and also featuring a pretty good organization of the content.
The top albums and videos are presented at a glance inside the home screen, while going through all the video and music files is fluent and without visible glitches.
You can pick the viewing mode from the drop-down menu and choose the location you want to explore in the video screen or pick the audio section to bring into view while in the areas reserved for music tracks.
The thumbnail previews (where available) are of good quality and can be of great help in identifying the clips you are after, while the playback is also smooth.
Basic controls for offline playback and online streaming
VLC for Windows Phone comes with the usual commands for moving to the next or previous clip or song, as well as navigating inside the file that is currently playing.
Unfortunately, it is full of flaws like, for example, the audio tracks refusing to open when selected. Nonetheless, you can create playlists and add your preferred songs in the desired order, so as to have them ready to play when the issue is addressed.
The extra options in the video mode include loading subtitles from the local or OneDrive storage and changing the playback speed. To open an online stream you will have to manually input the address and if the protocol is recognized and supported, the playback will start automatically.
The built-in search functionality is pretty useful and will come in handy when you want to track down some clips or songs hidden somewhere inside your multimedia folders.

Bottom Line
Design / UI9
The app certainly looks a lot better than it works, with the visuals currently being its strongest asset, so it scores well from this perspective. |
Function5
Barely useable for playing videos, as it lacks many functions and comes with a lot of issues, the beta quality of the current release is clearly visible. |
Security10
VLC for Windows Phone remains very discreet at all times, so it can be installed and used without any worries. |
Battery4
The utility will take up a considerable amount of power, so the battery usage remains at high levels while it is running. |
Price10
All the features provided by this application are available freely, without any restrictions or costs, so it has an excellent value. |
Compatibility8
Those who want to take this app for a test drive will have to do it on a more recent handset, namely one that is powered by Windows Phone 8.1. |
