Date: 18 Jul 2005, 17:22 GMT | ***Update***
I wrote a review of the Neonode N1m when I 1st got the phone, but now I have updated the phones software and added a lot of new programs, I decided to update the review.
Many of the bugs that were present in the original software release have been since sorted, and some new cool functions have been added.
One of my original main gripes was that there was no alarm. That has since been addressed and the new alarm program works very well, recording multiple alarms and also recording a history of the alarms that you have set, allowing you to easily reset the alarm for use at another time. The alarm can be any of the sound files contained on the N1m and is suitably loud to waken even me up! The alarm also can contain a caption or a note to remind you why it was set.
The camera has also been updated, however it is still not amazing. The image quality particularly in "night mode" is a bit of a let down, being very grainy in 1 megapixel mode. In normal light however the camera performs above average, still not up to Nokia standard though.
The ringtone has been made a little louder and the vibrate appears to be slightly stronger too. These are welcome additions, as is new added support for ringtones that can be assigned to individuals so now theoretically everyone in your phonebook can have a different ringtone.
A new function that allows you to make the phone vibrate when you tap any of the keys whilst dialling or typing a message is also a welcome addition to the feature set as it is important to have tactile feedback whilst typing on the screen as there are no physical buttons. The force with which the phone vibrates can also be selected, which is also very usful.
The calendar still has no alarm support which is disappointing.
I currently use a number of thrid party software titles, all available from www.redneo.com. I regularly use Pocket DivX player as it is very stable and if used in conjunction with a program that resizes your divx or other video files (available with div X player downloads, latest version or from redneo; Pocket DivX Convertor) works very well. I also use the very handy conversion program that converts all types of units of measurement and currency.
I can also recommend Neo messengerand Neo clock, as these are very stable programs and also very useful.
Other updates include the option to easily update the status screen from either the settings menu or the photo album, improved SMS and MMS handling.
The one reservation I have about the new software update is that it is less stable than the previous incarnation of NENO (the phones OS).
The IrDa is still non functional (possibly non-existent) and since buying the phone I have had to request a new pair of headphones as the old set mysteriously stopped working. I have no complaints with the service I received from neonode who worked quickly to dispatch a new pair of earphones, free of charge.
The phone now works with microsoft ActiveSync without any problems, making it a far more user friendly device.
With the new software I would rate the phone 90% as there are still a number of little things that annoy me about it. |

Date: 03 May 2005, 02:17 GMT | I just recently bought a Neonode N1m. I cannot say I am unhappy with the phone, although there are several annoying things about it.
I have had my N1m for 3 weeks now and it has functioned perfectly, not crashing once, evan when I have tried my hardest to tax its processor to the limit, e.g. opening various applications whilst running a movie and using the photo album. As a platform, the Neonode is very stable.
Where the Neonode falls down is on very rudimentary elements such as calendar function and alarms. It also doesn't support profiles like Nokia handsets do and the text messaging, whilst good, lacks a few features such as insert number from phone book. You also cannot text someone who is not in your phonebook or has previously texted you.
The call handling is very good, the quality clear and concise, the signal is well held onto by the phone, sometimes out performing my back up nokia 7650 on the same network.
The phones battery is good and will last a long time provided the screen is not constantly active; this drains the phones battery massively; if the keypad remains unlocked and the backlight on, the standby time would be very small indeed.
The media player and other supplied software works well, the camera is ok, not amazing, but better than many of it's competitors such as Motorola. Nokia Megapixel offerings are still superior.
The screen is of excellent quality and is still viewable even in sunlight. The vibrate function works well, but the ringer is not the loudest, possibly as I am using WMA files as ringtones. The sound quality during playback, particularly through the headphones is really good, very loud when played through the headphones.
The general functionality of the device is good, the only problems are small bugs such as a lack of finesse with text messaging, no alarm (calendar or otherwise) and the usb cable supplied is ridiculously short (26cm!).
Good points:
Very rare handset
Software is constantly updated, usually ironing out the bugs
Links very well to PC
Very easy to use
Small, light, versatile
1GB on board memory
Decent 3rd party software support
Bad Points:
Still has a few annoying bugs, i.e lack of alarm
No very loud when ringing
Awful instructions supplied
Camera could be better
IrDa still non-functional
No bluetooth
No accessories (excluding handsfree/headphones)
I am happy with my phone as I know the faults are easily fixed and the Neonode staff are friendly and take onboard your suggestions. They fully support 3rd party software development, even helping 3rd party developers.
The phone is updated regularly and hopefully my problems with the handset will be sorted.
If I had to give the phone a rating I would give it 89%. |
