Date: 28 Apr 2008, 08:48 GMT | Fly E300 is an upgrade of Fly's popular SX210, with the only addition of 3.2 megapixel camera (instead of SX210's 2 megapixel) and a jog dial (which is an ipod like jog wheel and hence can be used to navigate, functionally almost identical to ipod's wheel).
There is only one complete review available for this mobile which can be found at -

unfortunately this very negative review and only one I could read before I decided to buy E300.
For sometime I have been looking for an alternative to my aging (and buggy) Sony Ericsson W800i. Since the repairs from authorized shops estimated about 60% of the handsets cost, I totally gave up any idea of getting this fone repaired. In no time I was looking at my prospectiove buys.
As always, being a conscious buyer I started looking for phones with all desirable features yet a value pricetag. I was unlikely to get flirted by the likes of Sony Ericsson or Noika range of highly polished money sucking gadgets. After struggling for around a week I shortlisted three options these were - Bleu (a specific brand from Sagem range in India) 555x, i-Mate JAQ and Fly E300/SX210. My shortlisting looks a bit awkward because of the selection I have used, but that was all I could sum up after reviewing each thoroughly. Below are the list of features I was looking for -
1. Music Player.
2. Video Player.
3. FM Radio.
4. Java support with JSR-75 (through which a Java app can read phone's filesystem).
5. Bluetooth with A2DP profile ( A2DP profile enables you to receive stereo music in your bluetooth headsets apart from calls)
5. Good screen with nice resolution (at least 1.8" and no limit on upper side).
6. Infrared connectivity.
7. Touch screen (desirable, not manditory)
8. If possible an integrate organizer.
From the list above one thing is definitely missing - Camera!! For me camera is not a requirement in cell phone at all, because I somehow do not feel the camera in my mobile phone as a "real camera". I just seem to loose that sense of a "camera" which are being integrated into today's cellphone.
A detailed investigation in Internet and visit to local shops and branded mobiles/electronics stores (such as The Mobile Store, Hotspot, Subhiksha, Reliance Digital etc) quickly revealed the fact that i-Mate JAQ was not a worth buying product since it was too buggy and inappropriate. An idea of it's design/performace failure can be realised from the fact that it was retailing for around Rs. 7000(INR) when I last visited Reliance Digital from its entry price tag of Rs. 17000(INR), which is close to one third of handset's original price. After dropping idea of buying i-Mate JAQ, I hunted for Bleu 555x which received a solid review and score of 80% from mymobile.co.in. The same can be accessed from -

To tell it frankly, I simply could not buy Bleu 555x because I could not find any seller outlets in Noida. All of the authorised outlets declared by company were busy selling either Nokia, motorola, Sony Ericsson or Samsung, so no luck here!! Even talking to company's representatives did not helped.
At last my patience ran out when my W800i become completely disfunctional. So I connected web and started reading reviews on E300, which was not very pleasant experience. Since I got only one complete review on this phone which was totally negative. I have already pasted URL from mouthshut.com on this phone in the above paragraphs.
Somehow I was becoming interested in this phone so I dug further. A little closed study revealed this phone was almost entirely similar to its cousin Fly SX210 with an addon of 3.2 megapixel camera over 2 megapixel of SX210 and a jog dial instead of SX210's 4-way navigation pad. Reading SX210's review was not particularly helpful since it was almost balanced mix of good and bad feedbacks. Since I was running out of time, hence I decided to give this phone a try. I browsed for least price of this phone which landed me in Hotspot of Noida Sec-61, Shopprix Mall. The sales rep asked me to wait for a day which I agreed readily. The next evening I was walking out with this phone in my hand.
The phone came with all the things I expected to be there and many more. It has a music player, video recording & playback, FM radio with recording, 3.2 mega pixel camera, 320x240 2.2" touchscreen, Bluetooth with A2DP profile, Infrared, Java, Webcamera, TV output, MicroSD support 2GB. I paid a total of Rs. 8850(INR) for this phone.
To be very honest I am more than satisfied with this phone. Everything works absolutely fine and as expected. The sound quality is quite good, but I cannot claim it is the best. Someone with musical ears would be better to judge. The video playback has no complaints and works seamlessly. Addition of keypad apart from the touchscreen/stylus is a great convenience. In this regards it beats Motorola ROKR which cannot be used in single handed operation. A small glitch is on the build quality of the phone, which is not very good. But given the low price for these many things, it overshadows.
The phone comes good number of accessories bundled with yhe box - a pc/laptop-cum-charger cabel, stereo headset, and TV output cable. I really liked the idea of having a plug top on the USB cable for making it either a charger or a USB cable. This saves from hassle of carrying two cables when on move. The camera was average quality and was rather slow, but when used as a webcam it was far better than PC webcams. There is only one preloaded game - Icarus (Java based) which you will love if you like acrade style gaming.
This phone is essentially like Fly Hummer HT1, which is based on General Motors famous macho car Hummer. These two phones are essentially same with 3.2 megapixel webcam of E300 replaced with 2 megapixel in Hummer and the hummer styling colors, body which scores over E300 plain black colour, which is rather very very mature taste and might not be a go with youngsters. Reading Hummer's review will give you a 99% idea of this phone. The same is available at mymobile website at -

Final Verdict
This phone is so far the best I have purchased, leaving aside it's battery life which is quite less, but given so many things which can be done on this phone and being a touchscreen, it seems al right. My only desire is FLY could have bundled an additional battery with preferably an external charger. Though the headset jack is proprietry, FLY has included a 3.5mm style adapter which can be used with any standard stereo headset. In fact this headset is copied from Sony Ericsson's W800/810/700i's headset, but overall it sounds great and is quite comforable to wear. The entire handset despite all it functions, is quite slim and light weight.
If you do not mind an average camera and short battery life, this could be a gadget of your dream with a jaw-dropping pricetag. |
