Waze Social GPS, Maps & Traffic 3.9.2
Friendly UI
One of the world's largest community-based traffic and navigation apps, Waze lets you join drivers in your area and share real-time traffic and road information to save time, fuel money, keep your car from suffering and improve daily commuting for everyone.
Waze is designed very cleverly. It uses kiddy graphics to be very user friendly (unlike apps with intimidating, pro-level designs). Its menus have large icons with graphical representations of objects, resembling the Internet from the 90s.
As childish and outdated as Waze may seem, it’s exactly this kind of UI that you want when you need to keep your eyes on the road.
The tool allows you to see friends’ and contacts’ names when tapping a photo to share your drive data or location.
There’s also the great feature that was recently introduced called Waze Places, which helps you make information on local places fresh for everyone. For instance, if you’re in front of a new restaurant, you can snap a picture and add it to that location. It’s even possible to add driving related info such as if there’s a parking lot for customers or a drive-thru.
Live routing based on community driven traffic
Waze basically lets you know what’s happening on the roads around you: traffic jams, potholes, road constructions, traffic wardens, cameras, etc. You can also use it to find cheap gas prices and get notified of accidents. Everyone has a Wazer for an avatar, and friends can see each other in traffic and communicate via the built-in chat function.
The scrollable map is really useful, allowing you to get a bird’s eye view of the hazards in the area even before you hit the road. A Navigate feature uses GPS to guide you to your destination, and you can even use your voice to search for stuff. On iPad, Waze looks and works the same (but requires a cellular model to provide its services).

Bottom Line
Design / UI9
Despite looking childish and quite outdated, Waze has the perfect interface for the job it needs to carry out. While the design could be prettier, it’s really not a must in this case. |
Function9
Waze offers invaluable traffic information and other features that let you socialize with fellow drivers. It’s a life saver in any situation. |
Security7
It has access to as much information as you feed it. In order for Waze to work for you, it needs that information. It’s a tradeoff that you need to accept before using the app, hence the EULA that greets you when you launch the app. |
Battery6
In order to provide its invaluable service, Waze has to use the phone’s radios and location services at all times. The scrollable map also takes its toll on the processor and GPU. Hence, you should expect considerable power consumption. |
Price10
Waze is completely free and completely community-driven. It doesn’t flash ads before your eyes, and doesn’t include in-app purchases. |
Compatibility8
All devices with GPS capabilities are supported. Minimum software requirement is iOS 6.0. |
