A handy voice recorder with a cassette tape-themed UI

Among the gazillion apps sold by TapMedia Ltd., Voice Recorder is one of the more reliable ones. This one’s also ad-supported and uses iOS 4-style graphics, but it gets the job done and it’s free to download and use.

Styled like a cassette tape recorder

Voice Recorder looks a lot like TapMedia’s other apps, like File Manager, for instance. In fact, it’s a direct copy of File Manager which strips away some features in exchange for a recorder UI. It’s appropriately themed as an old cassette tape recorder / player, with Record, Play, Pause and Stop buttons. Because it’s software based, it also has a Save As button.

It's not particularly attractive from a design standpoint, but it does use an appropriate UI style, and it’s pretty responsive too. Although it’s thick and based on dark colors, the interface is also very visible and usable by people with less than 20/20 vision. Take the good with the bad.

Good for field work

Voice recorder can be used by journalists, teachers, students, musicians and pretty much anyone who is looking to make recordings and organize them in folders, archive them, sync them with other devices, or share them with others. Recordings can also be opened in external apps.

As ancient as it looks, it gets the job done and it’s pretty reliable. It integrates with popular cloud services like Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, and Microsoft OneDrive, and offers the option to set a passcode lock on the thing to protect the data.

The tool also comes with support for the iCloud Drive, as well as for TouchID, thus extending the optimization for the latest iDevices. iOS 8 users should also notice a gradual improvement in stability and compatibility between this app and their device.

It's a pretty reliable audio recorder and file manager in one app. You can even zip files into archives, integrate the app with popular cloud services to fetch and sync content across devices, play back recordings within the app, open recordings in external apps, trim recordings, and more.
