Prey Anti Theft 1.2.2
While losing money can be annoying, it’s the other things that count in such cases and that exasperate phone owners everywhere.
For such occasions, anti-theft apps have been created, such as Prey. This is a free security and tracking app that work for both iPhones and iPads, as well as for your Mac laptop.
WiFi and GPS
The way this works is pretty straight forward. First of all, it asks you to grant it access to the device’s cameras, both back and front and demands that you give it access to your location. Sure, those seeking privacy will get a shiver down their spines when tapping the “yes” buttons, but without these two the app is basically useless.
What the tool will do is that as soon as you mark the device as missing, it will geolocate it by using GPS and WiFi triangulation, putting its location on a map. It will also take pictures using the aforementioned cameras in order to not only help you physically locate the device, but also the culprit, in care you got robbed.
The app is a cross-platform one and you can control your account from any device. This enables you to trigger a loud alarm remotely, even if the phone is put on silence. This will give you a hint about its location if it’s anywhere nearby or it will at least frighten the thief.
While this all sounds great, remember that if your device was indeed stolen, it’s better to turn in the data to the police rather than go face off with the culprit on your own.
Safe data
For those worrying about their privacy, the app itself it pretty safe. The Pro version of the account allows you to add more devices and all information that’s being sent to the servers is protected with SSL encryption.
The free plan allows you to include up to three devices in the same account, but it somewhat limits your access to some cool features, such as the Prey Active, which tells you when your devices were last checked in, allowing you to keep tabs on which of them are connected and which aren’t.
All in all, this is a pretty cool app if you worry about your devices. After all, it’s better protect yourself in advance then feel sorry afterwards.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7
The design of this app is pretty basic, but it gets the job done |
Function9
When it comes to tracking your phone’s location, Prey is a pretty useful tool |
Security8
SSL protection for paying users, not much for everyone else. On the other hand, the devs promise to not touch your data and the app is open source, so you can check the code |
Battery8
The app runs in the background and barely touches your battery life |
Price8
There’s a free version of the app, but there are also several payment plans. |
Compatibility10
Only requires iOS 5.0 to work, which means that it can be used by all iPhone and iPad users. |
This is a pretty good app for protecting your phone from thieves or to locate it when you’ve lost it somewhere nearby
