Undoubtedly, WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging applications of the moment, thanks to the plethora of features it offers and the end-to-end encryption of messages. And now it seems that the application is welcoming a much-needed new feature, video calling.

WhatsApp beta version 2.16.318 brings the ability for users to conduct video calls. In order to activate the feature, users simply need to tap on the call icon and pick video call. It comes with the option to start a new call from the Calls tab or from within the conversation window, by selecting the call icon.

It seems that the new feature is limited to the beta version of WhatsApp, which means that in order for calls to work, both the caller and the receiver must have the same beta build.

If not, the user will be able to see the video calling UI, but an error message will be displayed when trying to place calls. There’s a trick that users can try in order to activate the feature, though. They simply need to back up chats and then wipe app data, before logging in again. It seems to work on some devices, according to Android Police.

The feature makes use of the front or rear camera on the phone, and users have the option to mute the voice or write messages during the video call.

Video calling seems to work for WhatsApp beta users and should be included in a stable release in the coming weeks. The APK for WhatsApp is already available.

Just recently, WhatsApp announced that it introduced a new feature for users to customize and enhance the pictures and videos that they would like to share with others. The tool lets them add emojis, draw on pictures, and even add text.
