14 DAY TRIAL // Not so long ago, we told you that word surfaced online that Samsung was considering putting Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets inside its flagship once again.
After the Snapdragon 810 fiasco, which resulted in Qualcomm losing a big contract, the promise of the next-gen Snapdragon 820 has sparked the interest of the Korean tech giant.
Unlike the Snapdragon 810, the Snapdragon 820 will take advantage of Qualcomm’s own custom cores dubbed Kyro, so the two chipsets differ at their core. On top of that, Samsung will be manufacturing the chip using its 14nm process.
Previously, we told you that Samsung was yet to make up its mind about wanting to use the Snapdragon 820 inside its Galaxy S7 or not, so the company is seriously testing the chipset before it can make a decision.
Today we get more details about this story. A report coming from G for Games claims that Qualcomm is currently supplying Samsung with an enhanced 3X version of the Snapdragon 820.
It appears the chip maker has spent a lot of time optimizing the platform and now is promising even lower power consumption and better thermal management, which in turn translates into a 10% performance increase.
In theory, the Snapdragon 820 could reach speeds of up to 3GHz per core, so one can see why Samsung might be interested in finding out what it can do. The Korean tech giant is expected to make a decision soon, as we might end up seeing the Galaxy S7 sooner than expected.
