14 DAY TRIAL // Motorola, which is currently part of Lenovo, is one of the global leaders in communications and electronics nowadays. But the company’s journey started many, many years ago.
Actually, this week, Motorola turns 87, so we’re taking the opportunity to wish it happy birthday and many years of activity to come. The electronics producer was founded in 1928 by Paul V. Galvin and his brother Joseph as the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in Chicago, Illinois.
The company’s first product was a battery eliminator, a home electronics device allowing battery-powered radios to run on standard household electric current. Then in 1930, Galvin Manufacturing Corporation introduced the Motorola radio, one of the first commercially successful car radios.
But only by 1947 did the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation change its name to Motorola Inc, kick starting the modern era. The company continued to produce all sorts of electronic products, and in 1947 we saw the advent of its first television, the Golden View model which proved to be extremely popular due to its affordable price. The device maker ended up selling more than 100,000 units in only one year.
In 1955, the company introduced a new brand logo, the stylized “M” insignia or “emsignia” we are seeing even today on Motorola’s products.
By 1983, Motorola had started tackling mobile electronics with the release of the world’s first commercial portable cellular phone, the Motorola DynaTAC.
That’s probably when the company started acquiring a taste for mobile technology and they have been making phones ever since.
