Google has been working on a new update to its Messenger application and it seems that version 2.0 has recently been made available to users in the Play Store. Google Messenger 2.0 comes with some UI changes and a new circular icon that resembles icons in the Pixel Launcher, available on Android 7.1 Nougat.

It seems that Google has decided to make some UI changes to its Messenger application in order to make it more appealing to users and match the general design in Android 7.1 Nougat. The application icon is now circular, and it seems that the color scheme inside the app was also revised.

Profile icons inside the messaging app are now smaller, which gives the whole application a slightly more polished look. Google also equipped messages with a more rounded bubble, which seems similar to Google Allo.

Messages are more compact so that more lines of text are displayed, and the app now comes with a status marker that tells users whether the message was sent with an SMS or MMS.

Google also made some functionality changes and bundled together Frequent and All contacts sections into the Top contacts area, which displays the eight most popular contacts in the address book. The list of all contacts is displayed immediately underneath the top eight contacts, in alphabetical order.

With this update, the software giant wants to bring Messenger’s design closer to that of Android 7.1. Google’s other instant messaging application, Allo, was released earlier this year and comes with end-to-end encryption, aside from other neat features.

Google Messenger version 2.0 is already available in the Google Play store.
