The Indian market is attracting a lot of attention to itself as being a lofty ground for device makers to evolve their business. And the latest OEM moving to India to produce handsets especially tailored for the Indian market is ASUS.

According to a new report coming out of NDTV, Asus has partnered up with Foxconn in order to start production of smartphones in two locations in the country. The operations will be kick started by the Zenfone 2 Laser, followed by the Zenfone Go.

The company says it aims to produce 150,000 smartphones in India per month by the end of the current financial year, which will amount to up to 80% of the sales in India. Smartphone penetration in the country is deemed to be around 10%, so the market represents a great opportunity for ASUS to expand.

ASUS also explains that they are looking to aggressively target the Indian market and, by next year, to be in control of at least 5% market share. It remains to be seen if this turns out to be a viable scenario.

The company has recently released the Zenfone Selfie, Zenfone 2 Laser and Zenfone 2 Delux, all spin-offs of its flagship device, the Zenfone 2, which was launched back at CES 2015 with 4GB of RAM on board.

At the moment, we don’t have any idea whether ASUS smartphones are seeing any popularity in India, but stats should become available at some point in the future.
