Windows Phone developers will be pleased to know that Microsoft has introduced new APIs in Windows Phone 8.1 that will allow them to create applications that edit video.

Windows Phone users should be equally thrilled about the new feature, which will give them more freedom on what apps they wish to use in order to trim their videos.

While news about the video editing features introduced in Windows Phone 8.1 leaked several weeks along, it's nice to know that Microsoft confirmed it once again.

The information has recently been confirmed by Microsoft with a new entry on the Build Session on Channel 9, which was spotted by the folks over at WMPoweruser.

It appears that the new Windows.Media.Editing API is the reason that developers will be able to create applications that allow users to edit video.

The new API is described by Microsoft as a new powerful tool that provides developers with the option “to quickly build a dedicated video editing application or add editing as a feature to another application.”

The description also mentions the “Windows Phone Blue” name as the equivalent of the Windows Phone 8.1, but that’s probably the in-house tag for the new operating system that will be announced later today.

Stay tuned for more details on Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8.1 unveiling during BUILD 2014 developer conference, and, hopefully, the launch of new smartphones powered by the new operating system.
