14 DAY TRIAL // We all know it, WhatsApp is a highly popular messaging service offered on many mobile platforms. But Android users seem to love the app the most, as demonstrated by the milestone the service reached this month.
WhatsApp’s very own Jan Kourn tweeted that the application, originally launched in August 2010, just hit 1 billion downloads in the Google Play Store.
Before coming to the Android ecosystem, WhatsApp was an iOS App Store exclusive for almost a year. But making it to Android really boosted the application’s popularity levels.
WhatsApp is currently one of the most widespread mobile messaging platforms with 700 million active users a month. Recently, the service started rolling out the much anticipated Voice Calling feature to Android users across the globe.
This move is expected to boost the app’s popularity even more. By reaching the 1 billion download threshold, WhatsApp joins the select club of the world’s most popular applications including Gmail, YouTube and Facebook.
Actually, the achievement is made even more impressive by the fact that WhatsApp is actually the second app in the top to actually be a non-Google app.
What does the future hold for WhatsApp? Maybe a Material Design overhaul will be in the cards soon.
