One of the few applications that allow users to watch videos on their mobile phones regardless of the format, VLC has just been released in the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Given the fact that Windows Phone operating system does not support other streaming formats aside WMV3, a third-party application with own proprietary server software is needed.

However, the VLC Video Player does not need such a server beside VLC, instead the application converts VLC video stream into a format supported by Windows Phone platform.

According to the developers, the application does not require the server to be a Windows system, so it can be used on Linux and Mac systems as well.

VLC Video Player 1.0 is now available for download for $2.99 USD via Windows Phone Marketplace and it should be fully compatible with all devices running Windows Phone 7.5 or higher.
