Today, Japanese mobile phone maker Sony Mobile officially released the Background defocus application for Android devices in the Google Play Store, where it is available for download as version 1.2.6.

The software had initially been announced as pre-loaded on the new Xperia Z2 flagship handset, but Sony decided to make it available for other devices out there as well, it seems.

The mobile application was made available for devices running under Android 4.2 and up, though XperiaBlog notes that it might work only on Xperia devices powered by Android 4.3 and up.

One thing that is certain, however, is the fact that all the features and capabilities that were previously present in the software on Xperia Z2 are coming to other users out there as well.

The mobile app was designed to snap two photos with different focus settings, and then to combine them into a single image with one object in focus and a blurred background.

“Background defocus – take photos in a professional style. Let the object in focus stand out. The Background defocus app simulates a shallow depth of field by creating a blurred out background,” the app’s description reads.

Sony also notes that users should focus on an object 15-45cm (0.5-1.5 feet) away and then ensure that the background is several meters away from it, in order to get the best possible experience out of the app.
