Sony has plans to extend its phablet portfolio

You've probably heard by now that Sony is prepping to launch its next-gen Xperia Z4 flagship model. The handset appeared in benchmarks the other day boasting a 5.1-inch FHD display, Snapdragon 810 processor and Adreno 430 graphics processing unit, plus 3GB of RAM.

But according to a new report coming out from Asian publication DigiTimes, Sony is also secretly working towards a device with a 6-inch form factor. Big phablets such as these aren’t something new for Sony. After all, the Japanese device maker rolled out the Xperia Z Ultra back in 2013, a phone which arrived with a spacious 6.4-inch display.

Sony already unveiled the Xperia E4, Xperia E4g, Xperia M4 Aqua and Xperia Z4 Tablet, so even if earlier reports suggested that the company would be toning down its mobile efforts, it seems this is not really the case.

The same DigiTimes report goes on to reveal that Sony is expecting to sell about 38 million devices throughout fiscal 2015, which is about to start on April 1 and will end on March 31, 2016.

The estimate is a little bit lower than the 39.2 million units the company shipped out in the fiscal year 2014 (which by the way ends today). Sony is still desperately trying to reinvent itself and the latest scheme has the company focusing on entry-level to mid-range models.
