No new devices will be PlayStation-certified moving forth

Japanese vendor Sony is making more changes to its mobile strategy, and has just announced that it is dropping support for PlayStation Mobile for Android.

The change means that future Android releases will no longer receive access to the PlayStation Mobile store. In fact, it appears that all Android 4.4.3 KitKat and up devices are affected by this.

However, according to the official announcement, PlayStation Mobile will still work on handsets running under Android 4.4.2 KitKat, though users who will upgrade to newer OS iterations might lose access to the aforementioned store front and might also experience issues when playing games.

While PlayStation Mobile will remain alive, it will be closed to Android users, including owners of newer Xperia devices out there.

One of the effects of this is also the fact that no new devices will receive the PlayStation Certified status, although we’ve already seen a great deal of such products (including phones and tablets that were not built by Sony itself).

Undoubtedly, many users will be hit by this change, especially since Sony has not provided an explanation on why it is taking this step. As XperiaBlog notes, the fact that the PlayStation Mobile service did not enjoy wide popularity among smartphone users might be the main cause for this.
