South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics is said to have managed to sell over 23 million Galaxy S4 units in the second quarter of the year, despite the fact that the handset did not meet initial expectations.

The info comes from research firm TrendForce, which has also unveiled the fact that the smartphone shipments went up 31.4 percent year-on-year in the three-month period, reaching 221 million units, DigiTimes reports.

The company also claims that demand for high-end handsets has dropped, but that the mid- and entry-level segments of the market are enjoying significant growth.

During the second quarter of the year, Samsung is said to have managed to ship over 71 million smartphones, marking a new record for the company.

Handset vendors in China also experienced significant growth in the timeframe, with Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo, and Coolpad said to be the most popular brands.
