The HTC One (M8) remains the only GPe device

Earlier this week, we reported that the Motorola Moto X Google Play edition, which was based on the first-gen version of the device, got discontinued.

Well, a few days later, we come back with another report concerning what appears to be the disheartening faith of Google Play Edition devices.

After being out of stock for quite some while, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play edition has been officially discontinued.

A quick search for the model on the Google Play store will reveal that the device is no longer available for sale. Bummer. This leaves the HTC One (M8) GPE as the only remaining survivor of the slew of devices Google put out to let people take advantage of stock Android.

The GP Editions don’t feature the manufacturer’s proprietary UIs on board, so that means that the Galaxy S4 didn’t come bundled with TouchWiz. That was a relief for many, but not anymore.

But the Galaxy S4 is already considered an old device. The Galaxy S5 has been out and about for quite some time now, and we’re already expecting Sammy to make its big announcement and roll out the Galaxy S6 flagship.

Sadly, a GP edition of the Galaxy S5 hasn’t been released yet, and apparently, Google doesn’t seem to have any plans to refresh the lineup. Are Google Play Edition devices doomed?
