Your average smartphone display is immune to scratching and bruises thanks to Corning’s innovative Gorilla Glass technology, which provides the display with a protective coating.

Well, good news everybody, Corning has just announced that the fourth iteration of its securing technology has been launched. And interestingly enough, you can already purchase a smartphone that takes advantage of Gorilla Glass 4. It’s the Samsung’s iPhone challenger, the Galaxy Alpha.

But the technology isn’t all about providing protection. No, actually its presence helped build the Galaxy Alpha chassis pretty thin, at 7mm / 0.27 inches. The screen’s front glass is 0.016 inches / 0.44mm, which makes for a good toughness-to-slimness ratio.

Corning highlights that the Gorilla Glass 4 is the most damage-resistant cover glass it has put on the market to date, so if you drop the Galaxy Alpha, it should turn out fine.

Corning experts have been busy examining hundreds of broken devices in order to understand how the glass cover breaks and have come up with viable solutions to prevent this from happening.
