Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system is expected to enjoy a significant increase in sales during the fourth quarter of the year, at least when compared to the same time frame of 2011.

According to a recent article on WMPoweruser, the number of people using the built-in Facebook app in Windows Phone has increased significantly since October 2012.

This year, there were around 627,000 monthly active users added to the app since the beginning of October, compared to only 150,000 that were added from October 1 to December 15 last year.

Recently, Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO, said that Windows Phone sales are four times higher than last year, and the aforementioned usage comparison can be seen as proof of that.

Windows Phone is expected to continue registering significant growth in the coming months as well, and might take BlackBerry’s third position on the smartphone OS market next year.
