Soon we’ll have no Google Play Editions handsets at all

Not so long ago, the first-generation Moto G was available in two versions: the normal one and the Google Play Edition variation.

The GPU device was rolled out shortly after Motorola launched the original. Still, the move puzzled many, as it was hard not to notice that the standard model already took advantage of a UI very similar to stock Android.

So the two handsets weren’t all that different to begin with. Anyway, it appears Google has decided to axe the Moto G Google Play Edition, leaving the HTC One M8 as the sole carrier of the Google Play Edition banner.

The original first-gen Moto G was quickly replaced by Motorola, with the second-gen variation

At first the GPE program got a lot of folks excited, as it offer the prospect of stock Android on other devices outside the Nexus family only after a few months.

GPE was unveiled at Google I/O 2013, but now only two years later it appears the program is on the verge of extinction.

Apart from noticing the acute scarcity of any GPU devices, Google doesn’t really seem to have any plans of rolling out any such new devices in the near future. But who knows, we may be wrong and the search giant could end up surprising us.
