The Nexus 7 is no longer available from Google’s store

Google brought the Nexus 9 tablet to the market and after almost one year since its release, the search giant has apparently discontinued its previous-gen tablet, the Nexus 7.

The slate is no longer available for purchase in the Google Play Store, although third-party retailers like Amazon still carry the model and you can pick one up from there if you really want. Both the 2012 and 2013 variations can be found there.

The original Nexus 7 was launched more than three years ago with Android 4.1 out of the box and it eventually received the Android 5.0 Lollipop update just a few months back.

The update proved to be quite tricky for some Nexus 7 slates, rendering some models useless in the process.

Even if before Nexus 9's launch word on the street whispered that Google might be looking to refresh the Nexus 7 with a third-generation model, it now seems clear enough that this won’t be the case.

Google’s Nexus strategy has slowly changed in the last few years, from offering extremely affordable devices with good hardware to releasing high-end models with more premium features. So that’s probably why Google is yanking out these models, in pursuit of its new way of doing business. The Nexus 10 might be next in line.
