Users are unable to send BBMs and emails or to open web pages

Owners of older BlackBerry smartphones in Canada are currently being impacted by a major network outage, with the BlackBerry Internet Services (BIS) being down since 8 am EST.

For the time being, mobile phone maker BlackBerry hasn't provided a statement on the matter, and it is yet uncertain how many users out there are affected by the issue.

However, according to MobileSyrup, only those who own a legacy BlackBerry smartphone (devices that run under a platform version prior to BlackBerry 10) are affected by the problems.

Owners of said smartphones (such as the Bold 9900) report that they are unable to send BBM messages, to open web pages, and to send emails.

Although the BlackBerry 10 platform still relies on the handset vendor’s servers for some of its services, such as BBM, it appears that the owners of devices powered by it haven’t been affected by the outage.

As mentioned on the Canadian Outages website, this is not the first time that BlackBerry’s network has seen downtime.

“Because all data traffic is routed trough Blackberry’s servers, there have previously been incidents where a Blackberry server outage would cause a blackout of e-mail, internet and the ping messaging service,” said website notes.

BlackBerry has yet to acknowledge the problem, and we’ll update this post with some more info on the matter. In the meantime, if you have a legacy BlackBerry phone and you’re affected, don’t forget to drop a comment below.
