Microsoft won’t offer more than 18 months of support for its Windows Phone 8 operating system, but Nokia appears committed to providing users with software updates on their Lumia devices for far longer than that.

In fact, Nokia’s Smart Devices Chief Jo Harlow told SlashGear that the company would support each smartphone for two or three years.

“I think that probably 2-3 years [of software support], certainly within the normal life-cycle that most people would own a phone [could be expected],” Harlow reportedly said.

As mentioned in a recent article, Microsoft will end the support for both Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 7.8 platforms in the second half of the next year. This is normal for the company, as it usually offers only 18 months of software updates for its mobile platform releases.

However, with newer devices set to receive an upcoming Windows Phone OS upgrade, users will enjoy support from both companies for a while longer.
