Nokia was one of the founding pillars of the mobile industry

Once upon a time there was a Finnish device manufacturer that revolutionized the world as we know it. But the Nokia we all knew and loved has lost the tremendous power which propelled it to be one of the top players in the mobile phone industry.

The company has a long history which started back in 1865 when Fredrik Idestam founded it as a paper manufacturer. But it took Nokia quite some time to start making mobile phones.

The first one, which remotely resembles what we know today, came out in the ‘80s as the Mobira Cityman which weighed a little over 1.7 lbs / 0.77 kg and cost a whopping $5,456 / €4,603.

From dominating the mobile market in the late ‘90s to partnering up with Microsoft in 2011 for the Windows Phone operating system, Nokia saw its fair share of ups and downs.

To save it from extinction, the company was eventually purchased by Microsoft which will be in charge of releasing future Lumia handsets.

Sadly, Nokia’s new CEO Rajeev Sun has made it clear they don’t intend on returning to the consumer market with handsets anytime soon.

The positive aspect is that there’s a big interest in licensing the brand, an interest which has already materialized in the Nokia N1 tablet with Android 5.0 Lollipop.
