Nokia's amazingly popular ringtone is much older than any of its phones. The tune was heard for the first time back in 1992 in a Nokia 1011 commercial and made history two years later, when it was released on the Nokia 2110, under the name of ringtone Type 7.

But few know that the famous Nokia tune is an excerpt from a composition for a solo guitar called "Gran Vals," which was composed by Spanish guitarist Franciso Tarrega. It became known as the Nokia tune in 1999.

Even though Nokia's mobile division has been sold to Microsoft, the Nokia tune remains a part of history that will never be forgotten since the ringtone lives on inside the new Nokia feature phones launched by the Redmond-based company.

In fact, here is something interesting. Beginning 2013, the Nokia tune evolved into a higher-pitched version and included on Lumia smartphones powered by Windows Phone 8.

And to show you how famous the Nokia tune is, the Finnish company held a remake competition back in 2011, in which almost 3,000 people from 70 countries revamped the tune. That's how appreciated the Nokia tune is worldwide.

You can find below the original composition for solo guitar "Gran Vals," by the Spanish classical guitarist and composer Franciso Tarrega. The Nokia tune appears at 0:12.
