Nokia’s Windows Phone devices, the increasingly popular Lumia series, should get a taste of the next generation Windows Phone platform release starting with this year, rumor has it.

Although Microsoft officially stated that there will be no Windows Phone 8 updates made available for existing devices, various reports around the web appear to contradict that.

For example, a tweet from Nokia Saudi Arabia, which has been deleted in the meantime, confirmed that Lumia 900 will arrive in the country in October with Windows Phone 8 on board.

Moreover, WMPoweruser claims that a tipster confirmed with both Nokia and HTC that Windows Phone 8 will indeed arrive on existing devices. Lumia devices in South Africa were also said to receive the update.

The official word from Microsoft is that there is no upgrade path from Windows Phone 7.5 to Windows Phone 8, but that does not eliminate a possible value pack update for existing devices.
