Mountain View-based Internet giant Google is reportedly planning to retire the Nexus series of smartphones starting with the next year.

According to a recent tweet coming from Mobile-Review’s Eldar Murtazin, the company will actually kill the entire Nexus series in 2015.

Moreover, it appears that it plans on replacing it with a new lineup, made of Play Edition devices, though these phones will be launched under a different name, the tipster claims.

“Nexus line by Google is over in 2015 ;) Yes - this line will be replaced by Play Edition (current name, it will be rebranded),” Eldar Murtazin said.

There’s no official confirmation available on this, and it remains to be seen whether this will indeed pan out or not. In the meantime, however, we can expect at least one new Nexus smartphone to arrive on shelves, supposedly later this year.
