Owners of four Xperia smartphones on the network of Japanese wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo could remain without an upgrade to the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich platform.

The operator posted a note on its website, saying that the upgrade would result in poor performance due to low memory, and that it has decided it would be best if users remained with the current OS on their phones.

The affected devices are Xperia acro (SO-02C), Xperia arc (SO-01C), Xperia PLAY (SO-01D) and Xperia ray (SO-03C), the first of which is a best-seller at the wireless carrier.

According to the post, Android 4.0 would require 1GB of RAM to deliver the wanted performance, which these phones do not have.

We already knew that Xperia PLAY was left outside of the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade plans, yet it comes as a surprise that other devices would also be affected, especially since their European equivalents have already received the new OS.
