Cyanogen’s latest Nightly is available for the handset

Motorola rolled out the Moto Maxx (model number XT1225), a variation of the DROID Maxx which was sold under the Verizon banner in the US, on the Latin American market.

The main difference between the two models is that the former comes with an unlocked bootloader. And here’s where it gets really interesting.

Google launched Android 5.1 a few days ago, and so far, only the Nexus bunch is taking advantage of it. But Moto Maxx owners can now also get a taste of the new build by downloading the latest CyanogenMod 12 Nightly from the official website.

Motorola started the soak test for the official OTA update last month, but owners of the Moto Maxx who choose to stay true to the manufacturer will probably only get Android 5.0.2.

So if you want to bypass waiting and jump straight to Android 5.1 (you’ll naturally need to unlock the bootloader and flash custom recovery), you can try out CyanogenMod’s Android Lollipop. However, you should take into consideration that the build might come with several bugs, since it’s a Nightly.

As for the US owners of Verizon’s “cursed” DROID Turbo, they probably still have a lot to wait until Android 5.1 makes its way to their devices. Motorola has just announced the advent of Android 5.1 for its second-gen Moto X, so they’ll need to be patient.
