A few days ago, Redmond-based software giant Microsoft was said to plan on paying a total of $2.6 (€1.91) billion to various mobile phone makers out there willing to launch Windows Phone 8 devices, but the company was quick to refute such rumors.

Frank X Shaw, Microsoft’s head of corporate communications, was the one to comment on the aforementioned story, claiming that, although Microsoft does spend money on marketing, the speculated amount was “complete fiction.”

However, Eldar Murtazin, who provided the aforementioned information in the first place, claims that Microsoft isn’t paying for marketing, but for R&D costs instead.

Apparently, these payments will be a bit different than those made to Nokia, which were destined for platform support. This time, Microsoft will offer them as co-marketing funds to those companies interested in joining the Windows Phone 8 party, UnwiredView notes.
