Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1, the next flavor of Microsoft’s mobile operating system, is set to start arriving on devices later this week with a nice set of new functionalities and improvements inside, one of which will be Live Folders, a feature that can be seen demoed in the videos embedded below.

With Live Folders, users will be able to group applications in folders on the Start Screen, by simply dragging and dropping one of them on top of another.

Thus, users will better manage the Start Screen on their devices, while also keeping applications grouped together for faster access.

One other thing that should be noted here is the fact that, even if said apps are included in folders, users will still be informed of any updates or notifications, as the Live Folder is pined to the Start Screen and works the same as a Live Tile would.

For a better understanding of what this new functionality will be all about, simply have a look at the aforementioned demo videos.

The Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 will start arriving on devices running under the Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview platform release as soon as this week. The rest of WP8.1 handsets will receive it as a final flavor in the next few months.
