We have reported earlier today that LG will launch its first curved smartphone next month, and now the South Korean company has just come forward with an official statement confirming the start of mass production of flexible OLED displays for smartphones.

LG will be using plastic instead of glass for this flexible OLED display. According to the company, “by applying film-type encapsulation technology and attaching the protection film to the back of the panel the panel becomes bendable and unbreakable.”

As expected, the display is curved top to bottom with a radius of 700mm and only 0.44m thickness. It’s also one of the lightest in the world at just 7.2g, though it measures 6 inches.

“The flexible display market is expected to grow quickly as this technology is expected to expand further into diverse applications including automotive displays, tablets and wearable devices.

“Our goal is to take an early lead in the flexible display market by introducing new products with enhanced performance and differentiated designs next year,” said Dr. Sang Deog Yeo, executive vice president and chief technology officer of LG Display.
