MediaTek might have been pressuring the device maker

In recent days, we brought to your attention the fact that low-cost chip maker MediaTek had apparently made an investment in up-and-coming Chinese phone manufacturer, Meizu.

Most of Meizu’s phones use a MediaTek chipset anyway, so the deal made a lot of sense to everyone. But the Meizu MX4 Pro is a little bit different, in the sense that it draws power from a Samsung Exynos chip, just like the Meizu MX3 that launched back in 2013.

The MX4 Pro isn’t an old device, as the company rolled it out on the market back in November 2014. So far, sales for the model have been going pretty well, but as Giz China reports, out of the blue, Meizu has discontinued the phone.

The decision sounds quite harsh, given that the phone is barely 7 months old, but speculation says MediaTek had something to do with it, due to the Samsung Exynos SoC that resides inside the MX4 Pro.

In the meantime, according to word on the street, Meizu is prepping its next-gen flagship, which is to be called MX5. The handset should arrive somewhere around Q3 or Q4 of this year and will obviously draw life from a MediaTek chip.
