The triumph of Android over iOS is quite evident

The richness of the application environment is a major point to take into account when considering which smartphone to buy.

So if you’re wondering which has the loftiest ecosystem – Android or iOS (we’re not taking Windows Phone into consideration here, not just yet), you might be surprised to find out what the answer is.

AppFigures has just posted a report which shows us that the Google Play Store was home to 1.4 million apps by the end of 2014, while the App Store housed only 1.21 million. As you can see, there’s a slight little-big difference.

Coming in at number three, with a distinctive gap, is the Amazon App Store which offers users only 293,000 apps although it experienced a 90% boost in its app catalog during Q4 2014.

The Windows Store wasn't even included in the statistics, but that’s probably due to the fact that AppFigures is not tracking it.

The boost in Google Play apps was supported by a significant increase of developers creating applications for the store in 2014, surpassing Apple for the third year in a row.

Apparently, there are 400k devs working to bring you Google Play Apps, while only 300k devote their time to serving the Apple App Store. 50k devote their time on Amazon.

Percentage-wise, the Google Play store experience saw a growth of 180%, while the Apple App Store only had a 160% rise in the last 12 months.
