Good news for Gionee Elife S5.5 owners in India, as the handset maker has just announced its high-end smartphone is now eligible for a major upgrade to Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

Initially launched in India with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system out of the box, the Elife S5.5 is one of Gionee’s first smartphones launched in the country that get a KitKat update.

According to the Chinese company, the update is now pushed OTA (over the air) in stages, so it might not be available for all Elife S5.5 owners at the same time.

Normally, Elife S5.5 users should be automatically notified on the update, but if you want to manually check for it simply head over to Settings / About phone / System updates / Check for updates. If it doesn’t show the first time, you might want to check for it later.

On a related note, Gionee also confirmed that Indian customers who own the Pioneer P4 should expect to receive the same Android 4.4.2 KitKat update later this month.

The bad news is that Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for Gionee Elife E7 is still under development, and more details on when you should expect it to be released will be made available soon.
