Android 4.4.2 KitKat, the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system, might not be available for all handsets out there, but more and more devices are receiving access to it, and Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is one of them.

Owners of the handset can now download and install the new OS version on their smartphones, though it does not come via the official channels, as some might have been expecting it to.

The platform upgrade is available for this smartphone through the CyanogenMod 11 platform, as nightly builds for the device are now up for grabs for people interested in taking it for a spin.

The ROMs can already be downloaded through the official CyanogenMod website, though users should keep in mind the fact that they are still tagged as nightly builds, which means that bugs will still be present inside them.

As XperiaBlog notes, some of these problems include lag on animations, along with a slow camera startup, though the overall experience that users will receive from the build should be a good one.

Before kicking off the download process, however, users should keep in mind that installing CM builds requires unlocking a phone’s bootloader and root access, which will void warranty. Users will be the only ones held responsible in the event that the installation process damages the device in any way.
