It looks like Asus has specialized in low-cost Android tablets. After building the Nexus 7 for Google, the company is now planning to launch its own cheap slate.

However, unlike the Nexus 7 which is cheap but offers powerful features, Asus is rumored to launch an even cheaper tablet, but with much lower specs.

In this regard, the folks over at Notebookitalia.it have just leaked the first press images of the Asus ME172V, which is the codename of the upcoming tablet.

According to them, the slate will be equipped with a VIA WM8950 processor, which is rather old, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage.

It will sport a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen display with 1024 x 600 pixels resolution and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera.

The slate will ship with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system out of the box, but it will lack 3G/4G connectivity. Asus ME172V will be priced at around $129 - $149, though in Europe it will cost €129 - €149.
