Today, Japanese mobile phone maker Sony Mobile has officially announced the availability of a new platform upgrade for the owners of Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, and Xperia ZR devices out there.

This is the Android 4.4.4 KitKat operating system version, which has been available for other handsets out there for a while now.

Apparently, Sony has finally managed to apply the latest touches to the software refresh, so as to make it suitable for the older Xperia Z series handsets as well.

Sony has announced the availability of the update on its Twitter account, and has also provided some info on the new features and enhancements that users will receive as part of it.

Thus, those who own an Xperia Z, ZL, or ZR smartphone will taste a variety of bug fixes, along with various improvements to the battery, Wi-Fi connectivity, and email. Other enhancements were included in the new upgrade as well.

The new OS update should arrive on smartphones over the air, which means that users will receive a notification as soon as it has been released for their own devices too.

However, they can also go to Settings > About phone > Software update to manually check on the availability for this new platform iteration.

Sony hasn’t offered specific info on how long it will take for the update to reach all Xperia Z devices, but you should expect for the rollout to be completed in a few weeks.
