Tablet PCs should become more and more affordable this year, with the first such devices to feature prices of less than $99 (€75) expected to hit shelves as soon as the third quarter of the year, new reports on the matter suggest.

Apparently, ASUS’s new Android-based 7-inch MeMO Pad HD 7 (8GB) slate, which sports a price tag of $129 (€98), might determine vendors to release cheaper devices too, a recent article on DigiTimes reads.

Prior to the launch of the MeMO Pad HD 7, Acer had the cheapest slate on the market, the Iconia B1, with Android on top, which was priced at $149 (€113).

Sub-$100 tablet PCs have been expected to arrive on the market since last year, but no vendor has managed to deliver such a cheap device so far, it seems.
