Prey Anti Theft 1.4.4

Track and locate your lost or stolen smartphone and tablet
Many people store sensitive and personal information on their phones, so it's only natural that people wish to keep them close. Still, every device should have an anti-theft app in case the owner misplaces it or it gets stolen. The number of downloads and rating that Prey Anti Theft got on Google Play Store caught our attention.

Set up an account fast

Obviously, you need to create an account when using the app for the first time, but it doesn't demand too much personal information only an email address and a password.

This is necessary because phones would need to be located via the internet and you'll need to log into your account from the desktop version of the app. Using one account, you'll be able to protect up to three devices so you don't need to provide different email addresses for your smartphone and tablet.

The interface is rather simplistic and dull, only a few settings arranged in a dark layout without anything to make it appealing to users. Enable device administrator so the app may use all its features to locate your phone if needed.

Tweak settings

Before you can start using the app, you should adjust settings in the menu. The app offers you quick access to your Prey account and the option to disable power menu, so that the device can't be turned off if its screen is locked.

This means unauthorized users wouldn't be able to power it off if they wanted to prevent the phone from being tracked. Still, the app is powerless if they decide to manually take off the battery. Every time you'd want to change settings in the app, you'd need to provide the password linked to your Prey account.

Locate your devices

The app doesn't open your Prey account, you'll have to use your browser for that. If your device is missing, Prey may attempt to geolocate it by using the GPS, it may grab detailed information on the network and IP address or snap a picture using the camera.

Remotely, you can set off a loud alarm that lasts for 30 seconds, in case the device is near your or displaying an alert message to let the unauthorized user know that the phone is being tracked. In addition, you may lock the device with a password or erase all data from the device and thus protect your privacy.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7

The interface is simplistic, only a few settings that must be tweaked as all other settings and reports are found under your account on the developer's website.

Function8

It does a good job at locating your phone using multiple methods, but similar apps come with more features.

Security8

It will peak into many areas of your phone, but that's only for running the tracking methods and finding your device.

Battery9

Unless you activate it, the app runs in the background and barely takes up any resources.

Price8

Basic features are completely free of charge, but you'd have to pay for extra ones, prices range from 5$ to 399$. The latter plan is suitable for companies.

Compatibility9

The tracker should work fine on Android devices running 2.3 or later, including phones and tablets, but it won't work on smartwatches.

Editor's Review
