Google Translate

Versatile translation tool for Android smartphones and tablets
Whether you are traveling to a foreign country and have trouble reading text written on signposts or you stumbled upon an article on the web written in an unknown language, a translator surely comes in handy. Included in Mountain View giant's suite of online utilities, Google Translate is a popular translation tool.

Intuitive GUI that you'll get accustomed to in seconds

Google Translate sports a clean design, without any unnecessary adornments. The main screen consists of a bar at the top, from where you can quickly select the source and destination languages, and a text box, where you should enter the text to be translated.

Translation results are displayed on the same screen and can be copied to the clipboard for pasting into other apps. For some languages, you can even listen to the text using the built-in TTS engine.

The app keeps a history of your translations and allows you to add your favorite ones to a phrasebook. What's more, the phrasebook can be synced and made available on all your devices.

Translate any type of text into multiple languages

The app can translate text between more than 80 languages. The translations are not always great and sometimes you will get hilarious results. However, for the most part, you can understand the meaning of the text from the translation.

A nice thing to mention here is that the app also includes a dictionary that shows the definition of the term when you translate single words. When it comes to entering the text to be translated, the app is very versatile. You can type in the text using the software keyboard, paste it from the clipboard, speak it into your phone's microphone, enter it using handwriting or capture it with the camera of your device.

The last mode is especially useful for translating text printed on signs and labels. After taking a picture, the app automatically recognizes the text and all you need to do is highlight the words or phrases you want to be translated with your finger in order to see the result.

Download language packages for offline use

Google Translate normally requires an internet connection in order to work but – and this is one of the app' strongest points – you can choose to download language packages for offline use.

This is especially useful when traveling abroad and you want to prevent roaming charges. The only drawback is that the offline packages are quite big at around 200 MB. Also, not all the languages can be used offline.

Moreover, the app comes with a Word Lens component which lets you point your camera to a sign or text and the Translate app will instantly translate the text, even without Internet/data connection. But it's only available in a number of languages. It also detects language in speech/conversation mode, allowing you to have a more fluid conversation with another person.
